Family, teachers, friends, co-workers and others have blessed me so richly

This year, things I am especially thankful for:

• Despite reaching an age where more and more things seem to not work quite as well as they once did, I am healthy and happy and able to do nearly anything I wish.

• My family, scattered as it is, are all healthy, happy — and employed! Wonderful children and a wife I love more every day. Could it get any better?

• To answer that last question, yes, it can get even better! Daughter Mandy will bring us our next grandchild in the spring and we are elated beyond words. I am thankful for being called two of the greatest words possible: “Daddy” and “Papa.” Who could not be thankful for great children and beautiful, healthy grandchildren? Grandchildren are about the only thing I’ve found that really are as good as everyone told me they’d be! God, thank you for looking out for all of them and please bring us a healthy baby.

• I’m thankful for long weekends and hope 2019 includes even more of them.

• I’m so thankful for air conditioning, even at this time of year.

• No business could have more wonderful, dedicated employees than I. This miracle you see in your hands each week is only a tiny part my contribution and mostly a result of long hours and hard work by many others. They are the best!

• I am thankful for newspaper delivery people everywhere. They rise early, stay late and go the extra mile, literally, to get us readers our favorite issues. And that includes the postal carriers.

• We are regularly reminded of the great risks law enforcement officers, firemen and others accept regularly to serve us. God bless them all.

• I’m thankful for blackened steaks, shrimp and grits — and pound cake.

• We should all be thankful that our community has generous, hard-working merchants who toil to offer us quality merchandise in sufficient quantity at reasonable prices. Try buying everyday items in other countries and you gain a real appreciation for our American economy.

• Thank God for America’s military men and women who keep us all safe and free. I hope more of them will be home with family at Thanksgiving.

• I’m thankful for many teachers who showed great patience with me as a youngster growing up. I’ve pleased some and amazed others, I’m sure. Where would we all be without our wonderful teachers?

• I’m blessed with a world-class preacher, a great ministerial staff and a church family that is warm and loving. How thankful I am for all of them.

• I give thanks for good friends, especially those who have so many talents that are beyond my grasp. They inspire me with their generosity of spirit and simple graciousness. You know who you are.

• God bless the good cooks at our restaurants who feed me so well! Yum!

• I’m thankful for the thoughtful people who take pen in hand (or keyboard) and write me letters to the editor. Whether complimentary or critical, I cherish every one. Write more!

• I’m very thankful for our readers, and especially grateful that there are so many of you. Our paper is growing, as is our community. Thank you.

• I’m thankful for a God who knows me better than anyone and loves me anyway.
