Firing up the Fourth

The annual Fourth of July fireworks show went off as scheduled last week at the Alma-Bacon County Airport, co-hosted by the city and county. Taking on the task of putting on the spectacular, the Alma-Bacon County Fire Department began setting up for the show at 5:30 in the morning, working through the heat of the day until the end of the show at 9:30 p.m. The firemen, and their families, set up what amounted to a small village on the far end of the airport runway to assemble the fireworks and associated safety equipment. Here, Park Lingenfelter, 12, displayed his patriotism at the show. The fire department members, several of whom are specially certified to put on the pyrotechnic display, spent over 16 hours in preparation for the big event, bringing in not only the fireworks, but safety equipment.
